PAR4392 - Tasmanian Blue Gum Wildling Control and Removal – Kangaroo Island
Following the 2019/20 bushfires on Kangaroo Island, Tasmanian Blue Gums (TBG) have germinated in areas adjacent to blue gum plantations, primarily in areas of native vegetation. Tasmanian Blue Gum wildlings/saplings are growing vigorously and in some locations are at high density and more than 3 metres in height.
PIRSA is seeking the engagement of suppliers skilled in working in areas of native vegetation, including creeklines, swamps and in areas of high value native vegetation. At times there may be a need for work on roadsides. Native vegetation in priority areas is regenerating well in these areas, meaning access to these areas requires careful consideration. In some areas, this regenerating native vegetation provides significant habitat for a range of threatened flora and fauna species, so removal of TBG wildlings/saplings in a timely and sensitive manner is required.
The removal of weedy Tasmanian Blue Gum wildling is therefore critical to the maintenance of Kangaroo Island’s natural assets and its associated economic prosperity.
