Description

The Town of Gawler is a local government authority situated approximately 42 kilometres north of Adelaide at the edge of the metropolitan area. The council area comprises a mix of residential, town centre, industrial, commercial and primary production lands. The Town of Gawler is a major regional district centre for the northern suburbs of Adelaide, Mid-North, Murray Lands, Barossa and Northern Adelaide Plains – serving some 100,000 people as part of the Town’s regional function; far more than its actual population.

The Town and surrounding Council area supports a population of approximately 22,000 people, with growth in Gawler between 2001 and 2011 being at a higher level than the South Australian average. The population could increase by as much as 20,000 people by 2026. Accordingly, planning for future growth is a high priority of the Council and the community that it serves.

The Town of Gawler has a strong arts community comprising numerous visual and performing arts organisations, groups and independent artists. The Town of Gawler supports these groups through the implementation or support of events such as the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival, the Adelaide Fringe Festival (the Gawler Fringe), the Gawler Art Award, the Textile Weekend Festival, various street and urban arts projects and regional touring exhibitions.

During recent consultation for Gawler’s Community Plan 2014-2024, local artists and the wider community shared their views and opinions for arts and culture to be incorporated as a major focus of the Community Plan. This feedback has been used to inform the objectives of this brief.
